Jon Bernthal is returning as Frank Castle in two projects in 2026, marking a significant expansion for the character, transitioning from his Netflix origins into major MCU titles. One of those is The Punisher Special Presentation (also referred to as The Punisher One-Shot Special), which is expected to release on Disney+ midway through the year to coincide with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as the actor is given more screentime following his character's dramatic comeback in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again – and it will not be fleeting, as his solo outing has locked in a record-breaking runtime ahead of its streaming debut.
According to a listing on the Writers Guild of America (WGA) website, The Punisher Special Presentation will clock in at 60 minutes, making it Marvel Studios' longest special yet. The studio has only released two other special presentations so far, but it is still a landmark length for Frank Castle's solo escapades, compared to 2022's Werewolf by Night (53 minutes) and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (42 minutes). The listing also categorizes it as a mix of "adventure" and "action," so fans are in for quite the thrill ride.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who co-wrote the script with Bernthal, The Punisher Special Presentation is expected to bridge the gap between Frank Castle's Daredevil: Born Again appearance and his big screen return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The character was last seen in a mid-credits scene following the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale, attempting a jailbreak from Wilson Fisk's Red Hook facility. Executive producer Sana Amanat confirmed that he is sitting out the next chapter of Matt Murdock's journey, with the storyline being picked up in the Special Presentation rather than Season 2 of the Disney+ original series.
Principal photography for The Punisher Special Presentation began in July last year, with leaked photos from the set showing Bernthal wearing a divisive new costume. The updated outfit appears to lean into the "war-ready" aesthetic that some people may have anticipated, given that the 60-minute special is rumored to be adapting elements of the iconic and brutal "Welcome Back, Frank" comic arc by Garth Ennis. No official plot details have been unveiled by Marvel Studios as yet, but early reporting suggested that Castle will be going to extreme lengths to try and wipe out Ma Gnucci, the matriarch of New York's largest crime family.
It was previously unknown whether The Punisher Special would premiere before or after Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, but with that release now right around the corner, it looks set to arrive after, perhaps as a precursor to Spider-Man: Brand New Day – which marks Bernthal's theatrical debut as the character in the MCU. The events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will presumably have a ripple effect on both The Punisher Special Presentation and Peter Parker's next adventure, though it remains to be seen how big Frank Castle's role in the overarching Spidey story will be (following his humorous entrance in the first trailer).
